Sonos app leaks unannounced miniature subwoofer

Small spaces often mean small sound. If you’re like me and live in a cramped apartment, there’s just not a lot of room for bulky speakers and surround sound systems. A potentially upcoming offering from Sonos could be the ticket for providing powerful audio through a small device.

The product in question is the Sonos Sub Mini. Sonos hasn’t announced it, and it’s not on the audio company’s website. However, as reported by Android Police yesterday, someone on the Sonos subreddit reportedly spotted the name while using the Sonos app.

“As I was adding my second sub to my system, I noticed the ‘more information’ button, clicked it, and was taken to this page within the app,” the Reddit user, u/S114HED, posted Saturday, along with this screenshot:

There’s not a lot of information there beyond the Sub Mini being “a smaller, cylindrical subwoofer.” The screenshot doesn’t offer any clues about dimensions, specs, features, pricing, or a release date.

Sonos’ current subwoofer, the Sub (Gen 3), costs $750, so a smaller option could potentially bring a lower price of entry for a Sonos subwoofer. The rectangular prism-like Sub is 15.8×15.3×6.2 inches, or 402×389×158 mm (W×H× D) and 36.3 lbs (16 kg).

There are smaller subwoofers than what Sonos currently offers, of course. For example, the BlueSound Pulse Sub+ ($750 MSRP) is 18×11.8×5.7 inches (457×300×146 mm) and 18.3 lbs (8.3 kg), the Elac Muro Series Slim Subwoofer stays trim at 4.8×15.2×14.2 inches and 17.2 pounds ($1,000 MSRP). And although the Monoprice SSW-8 takes up more volume than the Sub (Gen 3), it’s notably short (Monoprice markets it as being able to fit under a TV stand), measuring 21.3×6.2×15.7 inches (540×158×400 mm, weight not specified).

As Android Police noted, CES, the biggest consumer tech show in the US, is in January, so we may hear more about Sonos’ small subwoofer then. But since the company hasn’t said anything about the Sub Mini, it’s also possible that the product will never hit shelves and was listed on the app accidentally. For the small home dwellers among us seeking more options, let’s hope the subwoofer materializes.
